Top 5 Books Every Entrepreneur Should Read In 2019

The greatest men and women alive attribute their greatness to reading books. In this same spirit, as an entrepreneur, you need to make reading a habit.

Starting off the reading culture can prove to be difficult but it is something that can be nurtured slowly. As we release the anchor on 2019, here are my top five reads that I recommend to entrepreneurs.

  1. Richest Man in Babylon

Successful entrepreneurship is pegged on good financial management. My number one financial book has to be The Richest Man in Babylon by George Clason. Set in an ancient Arabian empire, the book depicts the quest of a man to change his financial situation.

The book gives easy steps (Cures for a lean purse) that will help you start saving and investing. In the book, you are also given tips on how best to protect your investments.

  1. Rich Dad Poor Dad

This best seller published in 2000 by Robert Kiyosaki still ranks as one of the most influential books I have read. Kiyosaki shares experiences that he learned from his friend’s dad (Rich Dad) together with his own experiences as a businessman.

The main theme of the story is escaping the rat race, what Kiyosaki describes as the life of debt and wealth illusion. This illusion he says is brought about by fancying white collar jobs that pay peanuts but offer ‘incentives’ and ‘social status’. Reading this book will most likely make you loathe white collar jobs but then again, its a good way of igniting the entrepreneurial spirit in you.

  1. The Smart Money Woman

This book by Nigerian author Arese Ugwu is truly a modern-day financial guide for the African woman. The book talks of a lady who has a good paying job but a spendthrift lifestyle has landed her in huge debt. The story follows through on how she learns her lessons and starts setting her financial priorities right.

I recommend this book for any entrepreneur that is juggling between running their business and working a part-time job. You can read my tips on how to strike a balance between the two here.

  1. Empire State of Mind

This read by Zack O’Malley Greenburg was my best read in 2018. The book is a biography of Shawn Correy Carter( Jay Z). It tells a tale of how the rapper rose from his hustle days to the pinnacle of the rap world. Aside from just painting the typical black man struggle story, the book depicts a certain entrepreneurial wittiness that is rare to find.

Jay-Z’s knack for new ideas and turning them into multi-million businesses is a quality every entrepreneur should strive to cultivate.

  1. The Alchemist

The Alchemist is by far my favourite book on this list. This epic story of a shepherd boy ( Santiago) by Paulo Coelho is more of a personal development book than a business book. Read my post on how personal development and entrepreneurship go hand in hand here. Santiago leaves Spain for Egypt in search of a hidden treasure. The quest for this treasure leads to an instance of self-discovery, the kind that each entrepreneur encounters on their journey.

I’d like to hear your thoughts on the list in the comments down below. Please suggest more books that entrepreneurs can read and grow.Don’tt forget to subscribe to our mailing list.

  1. The Alchemist is certainly a good book. Shows that what we are actually looking for is never far away if we pay closer attention. At the same time, longer processes may be required – to test our courage and willingness – to attain what we really want.
